    Summary

Knight Foundation supports transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts. They believe that democracy thrives when people and communities are informed and engaged.

The Foundation provides funding for the following initiatives:

    1. Arts - The Foundation's goal is to weave the arts into the fabric of Knight resident communities to engage and inspire the people living in them. The Foundation believes the arts are a catalyst for public dialogue and shared cultural experiences contribute to a sense of place and communal identity. The Foundation seeks innovative ways to reach, engage and increase audiences for the arts, including through the use of technology.
    2. Communities - The Foundation invests in civic innovators who help cities attract and keep talented people, expand economic opportunity and create a culture of engagement. They believe that the design of places plays an outsize role in achieving these goals.
    3. Journalism - The Foundation supports people and organizations committed to advancing excellence in journalism and informing people in communities of all sizes through experimentation, innovation and leadership. They fund projects of all sizes that advance Knight Foundation's goal of promoting informed and engaged communities to support a healthy democracy.
    4. Learning and Impact - The Foundation commissions research that contributes to the broader understanding of informed and engaged communities, both now and in the future. Additionally, as technology continues to transform the way people learn about and interact with their communities, research-based insights are crucial for leaders to remain responsive to these changes. We strive to be a learning organization and we believe that the most significant impact from research comes when its insights are widely shared.
