Summary
The mission of the Roy A. Hunt Foundation is to support organizations that strive to improve quality of life. As a family foundation, the Hunt Foundation funds a broad range of organizations reflecting the diverse interests of individual trustees. Approximately $ 3.4 million in grants are awarded each year. Most grants are general grants that are awarded for general operating support.
The trustees of this family foundation meet semi-annually to make grants to nonprofit organizations engaged primarily in Environment, Community Development, Youth Violence Prevention, International Development, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
The Foundation makes grants in two categories:
- General Grants – Trustees personally invite most proposals for General Grants. Grantees are typically organizations serving the communities in which Trustees live or work, organizations for which family members have volunteered, or schools they have attended. Most grants are for general operating support or direct service programs and range from $5,000-$10,000. The Foundation adds very few new organizations to this category each year.
- Initiative Grants – The Trustees work in committees to invite and review proposals for larger grants focused on specific results in Community Development, the Environment, and Youth Violence Prevention. The Community Development and Youth Violence Prevention Initiatives prefer programs based on national best practice models with potential for replicability, and primarily serve Pittsburgh and Boston (with occasional exceptions). The Environment Initiative focuses on partnering with organizations working on a national scale. The International Development Initiative focuses on countries in sub-Saharan Africa or Southeast Asia that are rebuilding after economic collapse, war, natural disaster, and/or political strife, and whose residents live in extreme poverty (e.g. Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Myanmar). Initiative grants are typically in the range of $25,000-$50,000. Please see the Initiatives' individual pages for their guidelines.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Giving Circle
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Giving Circle initiative is open to innovative community-driven organizations that are working to address the root causes of inequity. The Foundation will prioritize grantees that:
- Support efforts to reduce the racial wealth gap (promoting minority entrepreneurs and access to high-quality education opportunities).
- Cultivate and support minority leadership.
- Bolster minority non-profit capacity building.
- Improve health outcomes for minorities (for example, access to fresh food and mental health programs).
- Promote criminal justice reform (eliminating biases and promoting restorative justice efforts).
- Have organizational budgets in the low to mid six figures or projects within larger organizations that have smaller budgets.
The Foundation does not make grants to individuals, small businesses, or organizations that aren't incorporated in the U.S. The Foundation rarely funds start-up organizations and does not make grants for sponsorships, fundraising events, or direct or indirect lobbying efforts.
Eligibility Details
The Foundation supports United States-based organizations with a current 501(c)(3) status. Most grants are in Southwestern Pennsylvania (primarily in Pittsburgh) and New England (mainly the Boston region, New Hampshire, and Southern Maine), although individual Trustees may show an interest in organizations across the country.

Award Details
Award amounts vary. General Grants are usually between $5,000 and $10,000. Initiative Grants are usually between $25,000 and $50,000.
