    Additional Information

    Adolescent Mental Health

Mental health is the fastest growing category of disability costs, including the long term economic costs of health care, disability claims, and lost productivity. Most mental disorders – about 70% - can be diagnosed before age 25, with the onset of most mental health issues occurring in young childhood and adolescence.

Medavie supports initiatives that seek to strengthen access to mental health services and supports for children, youth, and young adults in ensuring individuals receive the support they need to live productive, fulfilling lives in the community.

    Post-Traumatic Stress

It is estimated that at any given time, one in 10 Canadians is experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with the prevalence rate of lifetime PTSD at 9.2%. PTS is often associated with veterans, first responders, and other emergency personnel. PTS is a mental illness that can seriously disrupt a person's life, for children, youth, and adults.

We understand families are key to ensuring people living with PTS are well cared for and can play an important role in improving outcomes. Medavie is committed to supporting families of first responders as well as serving and retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces living with post-traumatic stress.

    Healthy Living

It is well recognized that having access to good quality food and active living impact our wellbeing and risk for health problems. Healthy living, for example, can help prevent type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

Medavie is committed to supporting community-based organizations and initiatives aimed at healthy eating and/or active living. We believe by supporting initiatives that promote and improve access to good quality food, healthy eating, active living, and physical literacy, we can improve health outcomes for Canadians, in particular those most affected by poverty and food insecurity.

    COVID-19 Response Fund

The impacts of the COVID-19 health crisis have been – and will be – far reaching. This is why Medavie will support the needs of communities responding to the pandemic, with a focus on addressing food insecurity, the mental health needs of adolescents, and frontline responders coping with pandemic-related anxiety and post-traumatic stress.
